Self-Isolation Diaries – Week 101

Greetings, Internet! I hope everyone’s staying as safe and sane as can be. This week, I watched hella Olympics, Wordle got more difficult, and recovery things continued. Daily summaries below!

Day Seven Hundred and One (2/11/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Fifteen of Thirty-Nine. Follow-up visit.
  • Workplace disruptor, thy name is Val =)
  • Went to the surgeon for a follow-up appointment. He said things are healing the way they’re supposed to be by this point (i.e. there’s no infection), so, huzzah!
  • But still, four more weeks of wound care.
  • Dinner with my parents!
  • Did some standing!
  • I think I saw a 40-year-old snowboarder have a midlife crisis on television. I’m glad he eventually won a gold medal, because dang, he seemed like he needed a hug.
  • It’s Friday, so it’s Phoneday date and Wordle =)
  • Wordle: Four guesses!
  • Currently feeling: Four more weeks-ish of wound care to go. I can do this. I can do this.
  • Currently looping: My VALentine playlist.

Day Seven Hundred and Two (2/12/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Sixteen of Thirty-Nine
  • Last night was rough. Really rough. I feel awful.
  • Skipped breakfast.
  • Phone call with the surgeon to confirm that whatever’s happening is definitely within the range of post-op things that can happen.
  • Distracting phone call to get my mind off of feeling awful =)
  • My mother’s here! Thank goodness, because, again, I feel awful.
  • She baked a pie!
  • Pain slowly subsiding. Just taking it super easy. Watched “Coco” with my mother, and some Olympics coverage, because duh.
  • Unexpectedly had time for a video call =)
  • Wordle: Five guesses.
  • Currently feeling: Very much hoping that tonight won’t be as stressful as last night.
  • Currently looping: Amerie’s “1 Thing.”

Day Seven Hundred and Three (2/13/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Seventeen of Thirty-Nine. Pain is still noticeably decreasing, so, huzzah!
  • Watched “Tarzan” with my mother.
  • This boy sent me flowers. Roses. Um. What is happening?
  • A couple of friends visited! We had some pie. ‘Twas delightful.
  • Seriously, roses. Who sends roses?
  • Did some standing frame.
  • Brief late night phone call to thank boy for flowers =)
  • Huzzah for Hubbell and Donahue getting bronze in ice dancing! And huzzah for gold and silver in Monobob!
  • Wordle: Five guesses.
  • Currently feeling: I think this boy likes me. I am perplexed.
  • Currently looping: Billie Eilish’s “Therefore I Am.”

Day Seven Hundred and Four (2/14/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Eighteen of Thirty-Nine
  • Happy VALentine’s Day! (I’m beating you all to the pun, so, ha.) My mother and I split a strawberry and rose pastry from a bakery around the corner. ‘Twas amazing.
  • Random sporadic phone calls =)
  • Did some standing frame.
  • Phoneday Friday has somehow turned into Phoneday Everyday. Whoops.
  • Wordle: Four guesses!
  • Currently feeling: Gotta say, this is one of the better Valentine’s Days. Even if my body’s feeling kind of blah.
  • Currently looping: Foxes’ stripped down version of “Let Go For Tonight.”

Day Seven Hundred and Five (2/15/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Nineteen of Thirty-Nine. The pain from drainage is not pleasant. And something’s been off this whole time with my bladder (it has been holding more than usual, and I think it’s probably a combination of pain and fluid intake?).
  • Who has to print out tax forms? This girl, right here. So exciting, I know.
  • Long overdue video chat with my bestie!
  • Phoneday =)
  • Wordle: Four guesses!
  • Currently feeling: So tired. So close to the halfway mark, and trying to stay optimistic.
  • Currently looping: Billie Eilish’s “Therefore I Am” live.

Day Seven Hundred and Six (2/16/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Twenty of Thirty-Nine. Halfway through. Pain decreasing noticeably, so, huzzah for that. Drainage picked up again at night. Bah.
  • Was able to do a lunch call =)
  • A bit of dissertation prep.
  • Therapy!
  • Video chat with my sister!
  • Phoneday is most days that end in “y” now =)
  • Wordle: Three guesses!
  • Currently feeling: This girl needs to start writing her chapter. I can prep and prep until the cows come home, but I need to start writing.
  • Currently looping: Jessie J’s live performance of “Domino.” Her stage presence is fire.

Day Seven Hundred and Seven (2/17/22)

  • Post-Op Countdown: Day Twenty-One of Thirty-Nine. Drainage is still happening, but huzzah for needing less Tylenol! I switched to regular Tylenol a few days ago, and so far it’s been all right.
  • Didn’t sleep well last night. My body decided it was hungry at 4am, and well, it’s hard to sleep when you’re hungry.
  • Another lunch call =)
  • Watched “Brave” with my mother.
  • My mother made these pan-fried vegetable things with carrots and cabbage and they’re kind of my favorite snack ever.
  • Reading and article editing!
  • This boy sent me a letter with a custom wax seal on the envelope. Like it’s the Middle Ages. What the what?
  • Yay, Brittany Bowe! Also love the US-Canada women’s hockey rivalry (alas, we’ll get them next year!).
  • Wordle: Three guesses! Although I agree with Trevor Noah and Roy Wood Jr. that the NYT takeover made it less fun.
  • Currently feeling: I kept telling myself that I would start writing my chapter next week, but things keep coming up. Ugh, I’m definitely going to miss my self-imposed deadline. But also, recovery is kind of rough. I missed a talk that would’ve been relevant to my work (and still haven’t replied back to the person who told me about the talk, whoops). Perhaps tomorrow will be my “get stuff done” day.
  • Currently looping: Jessie J’s live acoustic rendition of “Price Tag.”

Thanks so much for reading! Stay safe, get vaccinated/boosted, and watch the Olympics!
