Self-Isolation Diaries – Week 116

Greetings, Internet! I hope everyone’s staying as safe and sane as can be. This week, I waited out my covid quarantine after my symptoms mostly went away, binged the new “Stranger Things” episodes, and got back into the swing of dissertation writing! Daily summaries below!

Day Eight Hundred and Six (5/27/22)

  • Woke up at 4:30am. Starving. Crawled into fetal position hoping the hunger would go away.
  • Got up at 6:30am because two hours of fetal position is two too many.
  • Finally ate something.
  • <exorcist coughing>
  • So many tissues. I finished “Shadow and Bone” on Netflix. It’s pretty good!
  • Watched the first two episodes of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and dang, I’m excited.
  • For some inexplicable reason, my father decided to move an important dissertation book to the top of a bookshelf because he “didn’t think I needed it.” He did this while I was in California and he and my mother were staying in my apartment (they’re renovating their home and needed a place to stay). I pulled the book down with the use of a grabber, and the seven-hundred-page book promptly fell on my shoulder. Ouch.
  • The boyfriend’s covid symptoms are not great, either. I hate that I can’t take care of him. I have the energy for it, even if I sound like I’m going to cough up a lung, but I shouldn’t get on the PATH train.
  • The Mets won, but I’m just really stressed about other things right now.
  • Wordle: In four!
  • Currently feeling: So tired.
  • Currently looping: No music, just coughing.

Day Eight Hundred and Seven (5/28/22)

  • Finally woke up at 7:30am. I was coughing last night until I decided to take Theraflu (despite not having a fever). Then I passed out. I need to get some cough drops.
  • Did half an FES cycle session.
  • Watched the first “Stranger Things” episode of the new season. Well, that was terrifying.
  • Yay, Mets!
  • Wordle: In five!
  • Currently feeling: Technically, the CDC says I can go outside wearing a well-fitted mask, but nah, I’ll just wait until I’m no longer considered contagious.
  • Currently looping: No new music, but oh man, the songs in the “Stranger Things” premiere were awesome. They really know how to put together a soundtrack.

Day Eight Hundred and Eight (5/29/22)

  • My body is really trying to catch up on sleep. <yawns>
  • Cough drops are here! Huzzah! Even though I only needed a couple for the whole day.
  • Finally did some dissertation writing! Hit my daily minimum of 500 words.
  • Yay, Rafa! Did not expect him to go to five sets in the fourth round.
  • And I’m speeding through the new season of “Stranger Things.” Dang, I just love these characters so much.
  • YEAH, LET’S GO METS!!
  • Wordle: Couldn’t get it. Alas.
  • Currently feeling: Kind of tired, but that’s probably because I haven’t been going to bed as early as I should.
  • Currently looping: Spotify’s “Moody Mix.”

Day Eight Hundred and Nine (5/30/22)

  • Did the FES cycle.
  • Finished volume one of season four of “Stranger Things.” Freaking LOVED this scene from episode four. And I keep listening to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” Also <LIGHT SPOILER> I saw on Twitter, someone pondered, “Imagine dying because your friends don’t know your favorite song.” But also, the whole scene is like, music saves lives.
  • Just thought back to nights in the hospital listening to the iPod my sister’s friends chipped in to get me, because my brain didn’t know how to deal with the massive curveball life had thrown at me. And how I needed that iPod to sleep at night.
  • Dang, “Stranger Things.” You hit hard.
  • Let’s go Mets!
  • AND LET’S GO RANGERS!
  • Wordle: In four!
  • Currently feeling: Today is a great day to root for NY sports teams.
  • Currently looping: Spotify’s “Women of Rock” playlist. But also I rewatched that scene from “Stranger Things” like five times.

Day Eight Hundred and Ten (5/31/22)

  • Dissertation writing day!
  • <types furiously>
  • <backs up document>
  • Music hangout! At long last!
  • Ran into a woman in my building while throwing out garbage (I was wearing a KN-95 mask). Her dog came over to me and I froze, and then looked at the owner with panic in my eyes as I pointed to my mask and said, “I’m…getting…over…” And then she looked at me like she knew, nodded, and walked away. And then, like the awkward weirdo that I am, I called after her, “I’m two days away from the CDC saying I’m no longer contagious!”
  • <awkward turtle>
  • Folks, you can’t take the awkward out of the girl, that’s for sure.
  • Let’s go Mets!
  • Oh, you know I’m still rewatching that iconic “Stranger Things” scene and thinking about all the songs I listened to in the immediate post-injury phase as I metaphorically ran from dark places. <snifflles> Still hits.
  • Wordle: In four!
  • Currently feeling: Today was super productive! Haven’t had one of those days in a while.
  • Currently looping: What’s that? Covers of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”? Today I grace you with Jennie Abrahamson’s orchestral rendition.

Day Eight Hundred and Eleven (6/1/22)

  • How is it already June??
  • Tested negative for covid! I’ll keep testing for the next few days to make sure it’s consistent.
  • Did the FES cycle. First full session in weeks.
  • Therapy!
  • Let’s go Mets!
  • More dissertationing! Finally back on a pace that doesn’t embarrass me!
  • Got a Swiffer Wetjet and proceeded to get way too excited in cleaning my bathroom floor.
  • Let’s go Rangers!!
  • Wordle: In three!
  • Currently feeling: Huzzah for productivity and New York sports!
  • Currently looping: Ad Infinitum’s “Chapter II – Legacy” album. It’s been great for dissertation writing.

Day Eight Hundred and Twelve (6/2/22)

  • Another negative test! Huzzah!
  • Went out for an earl gray chocolate mousse. ‘Twas delicious =)
  • Checked out a Whole Foods that opened up recently in my neighborhood. It’s so spacious and well-stocked! But I guess that makes sense because it just opened.
  • Yeah, Coco Gauff! (That’s right, I follow tennis, too.)
  • Huh, didn’t expect the Celtics to beat the Warriors in San Francisco.
  • Phoneday is still happening, but it’s everyday, so I feel like it’s an extraneous bullet point by this point. And I’m quite happy about that.
  • That sleep dilemma of wanting to stay up for west coast games, but knowing you should go to bed before 1am.
  • Wordle: In three!
  • Currently feeling: Probably should’ve gotten some work done, but today was busy, so, tomorrow!
  • Currently looping: Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup.” It showed up in a Spotify playlist and I liked it.

Thanks so much for reading! Stay safe, wear a mask, and make sure you’ve gotten that booster, because Omicron is no joke.

  1. I did the same thing and had to re watch that scene with Max over and over again! lol I think everyone who loves Stranger Things has Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush stuck in their heads in an endless loop. I already had the version by Placebo on my iPad, but it took me no time at all to add this one. I’m glad we only have less than a month for volume two! Take care, and I love reading your blog.
